When most people think of Movado watches they envision a dark dial design with a singular dot at the twelve o’clock position. Although the simplicity of this design has been their trademark, there are and have been different styles of Movado watches. The single dot design is notably characterized in their museum style design. The word Movado comes from the Esperanto word for always in motion. The language, Esperanto, was invented in 1887 by Zamenhof, a Polish doctor, and is considered an artificial language.
In 1881, a nineteen year old swiss visionary named Achille Ditesheim launched the company in a small town in Switzerland called La Chax-de-Fonds. The company has flourished and now boasts over one hundred patents and has been recognized over twice that amount with awards for style and design. There have been a number of notable watch designs over the years. For instance, the 1912 Polyplan, 1927 Erneto, WWI Soldier’s Watch, and the 1950’s Kingmatic are just a few of the more well known watches. The latest incarnation is the Museum style. Interestingly, the Erneto is characterized by a pillow shaped case that winds the watch with each opening and closing.
The Museum watch reached prominence with its acceptance by the Museum of Modern Art in New York in its permanent watch collection. Movado has also been known as a promoter of the arts.
